Scholar Stone Series

Coming across Wu Bin “Ten Views of a Lingbi Stone”, Luis felt drawn to both the style of Wu Bin’s depiction of the stone as well as the history of scholar stones in Asian culture. The Scholar Stone Series is his foray into a more stylistic approach of depicting his subject matter through scratch art rather than the more traditional realism technique.

Alebrije Series

Inspired by a sculpture seen in the Natural Museum of Anthropology, Luis began this series with the Aguilá Jaguar, or Eagle Jaguar. This Alebrije represents the two elite warrior classes of the Aztecs and is a commonly seen depiction of these animal spirit guides. Luis later went on to depict his own magical creatures — with unexpected animal combinations. This is an evolving series that continues to inspire his work.

Couples Series

The aggression expressed in the wolves, the strength of the mighty longhorns, and the grace of the deer, these are all traits you can see in people as well. Luis was inspired by, not only the duality of the male and female forms of these animals, but the closeness they share and how it connects to interpersonal relationships.
